1. Aims and Philosophy

The Doctors Reform Society (DRS) was formed in 1973 by Australian doctors who wanted to promote the introduction of universal health insurance.

1.1  The DRS aims to promote changes in society and reforms in Australian health services conducive to good health.

1.2  The DRS endorses the World Health Organisation definition of health as the optimal state of physical, social and mental well-being, not merely the absence of disease.

1.3  The DRS believes that health is a fundamental human right which has as its prerequisites social justice and equity.

1.4  The DRS recognises that health is not just a national issue, but a global issue of prime concern to all.

1.5  The DRS believes health care should be available to all, free at the point of delivery, and funded by progressive general taxation.

1.6  The DRS pursues its aims by promoting informed debate in the community and among doctors, by publications including the journal NEW DOCTOR and by participation in the democratic processes of Australian society.

1.7 The DRS membership is united in its concern for the provision of just and equitable health services for all sections of Australian society.
