Health Minister Puts Health Of Women At Risk

“The decision by the Health Minister, Tony Abbott to maintain the ban on the abortion drug, RU486, denies many women a safer alternative to the standard abortion procedure and puts lives at risk,” said Dr Tim Woodruff, President, Doctors Reform Society.

“The claim that there would be increased risks for women who don’t have access to hospitals is a furphy, given that doctors will still have to prescribe the drug, knowing that they must be able to manage any complications which may arise,” said Dr Woodruff.

“This decision puts women at increased risk by denying them a safer alternative. It is strange that a Minister for Health would choose such an unhealthy option, but sadly appears to reflect the imposition of moral values onto an issue which has already been addressed decades ago by the Australian people and its parliament.”
