"The commitment today by ”The Greens” to a universal health care system with affordable access for all Australians gives voters a chance to put there hands up for health in this election," said Dr Tim Woodruff, President, Doctors Reform Society.
"Today the Greens have unveiled a health policy for all Australians based on the real Principles of Medicare - NOT a Medicare safety net status for the elderly, health care card holders or those with a big credit card".
"The Greens are offering a clear choice to the major 2 parties - unequivocal support for a robust and universal Medicare and public health system and rejection of the failed Private Health Insurance Rebate which is costing Australian Taxpayers $3.6 billion annually and which has already resulted in a blow out of health costs from 8.4% GDP to 9.5% GDP," said Dr Woodruff.
"We know this is the Medicare Australians want and for which they have voted on numerous other occasions. We know that all Australians depend on the Public Hospital system when they are really sick - even Mr Latham and Kerry Packer - and bulk billing is extremely popular with the electorate."
"What the Greens are proposing is cost effective and affordable health care for all, based on need and not ability to pay. What the Greens are also promising is strong opposition in the Parliament to any further drift towards a US style “for profit” health system. It is a welcome contrast to the Coalition's view of a privatised health system for the rich, a safety net for the poor, and a struggle for everyone in between," said Dr Woodruff.
