Today's news that the media baron, Kerry Packer and cardboard king, Richard Pratt, have invested heavily in the medical profession signals a quantum change in the way suffering Australians will be managed by our health care system.
"I have no doubt that the corporate accountants have worked out a hugely profitable scenario" said Dr Peter Davoren, National President of the Doctors Reform Society.
" I am also sure that health care will become hugely expensive without any noticeable improvement in people's health. The injection of $70 million will need to be amortised and this can only be achieved by putting patients through all sorts of high tech interventions, most of them unnecessary" said Dr Davoren.
" Australians also have a right to know if budget-holding is being planned by the Government, and what's really behind the move of such powerful people into health care" said Dr Davoren. 28 September, 2000
