"Erode bulk-billing and risk your political health, PM"
Mr Howard, Medicare was introduced by the Whitlam Government as a
universal, publicly funded health system, a system where we all, rich or
poor, could have access to decent health care. It was not created as a
two-tiered system, a safety net for the poor. We already had that. So
don't try to deceive us.
There are too many of us who remember what it was like not to be able to
afford to go to the doctor when our children were sick, or to have to
go, cap in hand, and ask the doctor to see us for nothing. Not a lot of
dignity or joy in this, Mr Howard.
So please, do the right thing by your fellow citizens. Spend our money
on all of us and stop rewarding those who have private health insurance
with a $2.5 billion bonus each year.
You promised to protect and maintain Medicare, Mr Howard, and this is
what you must do.
