About the DRS

The Doctors Reform Society (DRS) is an organization of Australian doctors and medical students. It functions as a medico-political think tank, a lobby group and a public resource centre. Members, from all sections of the profession, are united in their concern for the provision of a just and equitable health care system.

The DRS was formed in 1973 to support a proposal for a publicly-funded universal health insurance system. Despite opposition from the Australian Medical Association, Medibank (now Medicare) was born. Now, all Australians are insured by Medicare and no longer have to rely on an expensive and inequitable system of private health insurance. The DRS continues to defend Medicare and lobby for improvements within the system.

The DRS has a record of focusing attention on areas requiring reform (such as Aboriginal health, women's health, community health, gun control and preventive medicine) before they became established as mainstream issues.

The DRS publishes a journal "New Doctor", as well as local newsletters, and holds conferences annually. Open debate on all health issues is encouraged, and all members' views are valued.

The DRS is not affiliated to any political party, receives no corporate funding, and relies financially on subscriptions from its members. The DRS will speak out against any political party, organization or individual that threatens public health care.
