It's the International Year of Older Persons this year. Sadly it seems it is also the year that scaremongerers are out in force, promoting the fallacy that the ageing of the population and the health needs of the elderly are set to bankrupt Australia. These scare tactics particularly surface in debates about the future of private health insurance. Surprisingly, the increasing longevity of our population is not seen as a cause for celebration. Instead it is used to raise the spectre that universal access to health care under Medicare, is not sustainable.
