The Brisbane Courier Mail has recently published a number of articles written by journalists outraged at the violent abuse of Aboriginal women by Aboriginal men on remote and rural communities. Alcohol is the cause and the solutions are quite simple; "Anyone who fights or argues there should be treated the same as in pubs anywhere - banned" (Koch 1998).
Their simplistic approach and patronising attitudes, for example "The rest of us are standing by to help where it is needed" (Kavanagh), 1998) are really nothing more than tabloid sensationalism parading suffering and pain without regard. The journalists display all the trappings of Hansonism. Play with the emotions, provide no sensitive discussion, confuse and divide, .......and then they just walk away. Leaving us to clean up the mess, to diffuse the situation, to work with the confused, to bring together the divided, to justify our existence, to cop it sweet. ....
