Aboriginal community controlled health services have been around for a long time, since Redfern started the push in 1971. Our communities have always had a philosophy of helping one another to get new health services up and running, and advocating for each other. This led to the early establishment of the National Aboriginal and Islander Health Organisation (NAIHO), which evolved into the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation in the early 1990s.
After a long battle, we finally managed to get some central resources for NACCHO, and we became an incorporated body and established our National Secretariat in Canberra last year. This has made a huge difference - we’re now in a much better position to make NACCHO’s presence felt nationally and to win gains for our members. We have already made big inroads in terms of being recognised as the national peak body in Aboriginal health, but we still have a long way to go in raising NACCHO’s profile on the national stage - in the media and with political parties - and this is high on our list of priorities.
