Before jumping to any conclusions based on media versions of what One Nation leader Ms Pauline Hanson has said I took the trouble to read her speeches just prior to the Queensland election. The overwhelming feeling I was left with was one of pain and sadness. In her speeches one hears the cries of many Australians, the distress of people deserted and desperate.

It is my task to present an analysis of how this pain is being dealt with in terms of individual and group psychology. What is at stake here is not the understanding of a tragic search for scapegoats but rather the search for individuals and groups to carry the pain others can no longer bear...
