Editorial of New Doctor issue 69
New DOCTOR
No 69
Winter 1998

Editorial

This issue focuses on health policy in Australia. Professor Jane Hall discusses the health system in this country with clarity and reason. Dr Martin Dooland addresses the abolition of the Commonwealth Dental Health program in December 1996. Dr Bill Bor provides an insight into the mind of the One Nation supporter.

Professor Gavin Mooney looks at the philosophy of a minimally decent health system while Drs Theo van Lieshout, Peter Davoren and Alison Creagh critically survey aspects of health care from local perspectives.

As usual, News and Notes, Letters and Book Reviews are included.

The message is that governments must continually be made aware of the human dimension of health care. Economic rationalist policy which denies this human dimension is shown to be the rhetoric of an irrational discourse. It bears as much resemblance to serious economic theory as quackery does to a rigorous study of medicine.

As this issue goes to press, the Coalition Government is again committing taxpayer money to private health insurance holders in the form of taxation rebates. It is health policy directed at 30 percent of the population rather than addressing the health care needs of the whole population.

We hope that the issue is informative and stimulates action to protect the public health system of Australia.

As always, we invite our readers to let us have their thoughts on these and other subjects of interest to our members and subscribers.
